MANAGING CAT & DOG ALLERGIES IN WICKER PARK, CHICAGO

Dog itching

Cat and dog allergies are common during our warmer months in spring, summer, and fall. Dogs are more likely to develop an allergy than cats. Similar to us, dogs and cats can be allergic to a variety of things in their environment, which causes them to develop itchy, irritated skin. Allergies can lead to serious discomfort for your pets and lots of frustration for you! At Companion Animal Hospital Wicker Park, we use dermatology services to treat allergic skin conditions and get your pet the relief they deserve.

If your pet is scratching themselves more than usual, it could be an allergy.

Schedule a visit so we can get them relief.

DIAGNOSING CAT & DOG ALLERGIES

Many of the skin conditions caused by allergies could also be indicative of other underlying conditions. Therefore, it’s important that we perform a full exam and run specific tests to identify your pet’s dermatological condition.

Tests we’ll run may include:

  • Allergy testing
  • Skin scraping and cytology
  • Blood testing
  • Food elimination diet (if food allergies are suspected)

FINDING RELIEF WITH THE RIGHT TREATMENT

Allergies can be difficult to treat, as not every pet will respond the same way to each treatment. Other times, your pet’s allergies may simply be stubborn and take time to improve. We’ll work hard with you to determine the best treatment option for your pet that gets them lasting relief.

Our treatment options include:

  • Injectable anti-itch medication (Cytopoint)
  • Oral anti-itch medication (Apoquel or Atopica)
  • Daily supplements
  • Topical medication
  • Medicated shampoos
  • Hypoallergenic diets and treats
